I have had such a fantastic time meeting all the wonderful people that make up this community at the newly birthed Old Beach Farmer's Market.
Laura and Kal Habr are geniuses and have created this micro-village in the parking lot at Croc's restaraunt/bar. It is a truly "green" event and these guys have worked so hard to keep it natural and simple.
We set up our tent at 7:30 each Saturday morning. Across from us is a lovely tent under which you can buy freshly baked sweet potato biscuits or cookies. Cati-corner is an stall with fresh-cut flowers and plants. To our left there are organic herb and vegetable plants for sale ( I bought a huge bunch of basil for $3!!!!) and next to that some fine folks are selling fresh bread, blueberry sorbet and fresh mozzerella. (I bought two of the cheese (even though we make our own chevre) to go with the basil, and some lovely roma tomatoes.
Our real life neighbors, the Cromwells have a beautiful farm in Pungo and sell fresh corn and other produce at the farmer's market. They are really the anchor of the whole operation. People line up at 7:50 for that fresh corn and Robert is there, steadily selling away until noon, when the last of the shoppers are told that "time's up!"
People line up for us, as well. Fresh eggs are too few and I have to turn people away with the promise that I will have more next week. 16 dozen in 20 minutes! Today people were going crazy for the lovely blackberries that we had picked last night. They are huge and so delicious. Blueberries, too. What a wonderful time of year!
